Leonie Sherif – VENUS (2024)

Drawing together the RnB and pop vibes of the 90s with a contemporary brand of pop and Afrobeat shimmering beneath, Leonie Sherif has a nostalgic but very new sound to her name. For just over a decade, the UK-based singer-songwriter has made her way through the music industry from original releases to production, songwriting for new artists, and mentoring up-and-comers. This is our introduction to Sherif, so we are a little late to the party as she has reached audiences far beyond her native East London/Essex home. Come with us as we delve into her latest single ‘VENUS’.

I hear the name Venus and immediately think of the mythological goddess of love, beauty and sexuality. When it comes to Sherif’s ‘VENUS’, well the song might as well be Roman Venus’ theme tune. Sassy, sexy and brimming with the intoxicating sensuality we feel from Sade in ‘Smooth Operator’, Sherif’s ‘VENUS’ is a heady haze of indulgence. Rather fantastic as it captures the core of her new perfume VENUS. She explains:

“…’VENUS’ is the sonic embodiment of my newest fragrance by the same name… Experience the olfactory and auditory interchangeably with this newest work of art. ‘VENUS’ is the ultimate feminine energy anthem, it’s sassy, sexy lush and dreamy and encapsulates the essence of my fragrance…”

Immersed in the aromatic lushness of her perfume, the hypnotic music enhances its femininity. Co-produced with Galileo Damascus through Sherif’s production company SENSE ‘N’ SHERIF music, ‘VENUS’ combines bold beats with a heavy synth-driven melody tapped by tinkling reggae-influenced grooves.

While the instrumentation is toe-tapping with a body-swaying nature, it is Sherif’s rich vocals that add something special to the single. Haunting and skin-chilling but with a warm exuberance, the dulcet tones hold you close while simultaneously leading you along across a fuzzy dancefloor. To your demise? I don’t know. What I do know is it’s all fantastic.
