The Mess:Age – MR W.H.O (2024)
As we reach the “end times or Age Of Mess”, reality is facing a transformation – spiritually, politically, socially, geologically. Heading downhill is one way of describing this Age of Mess; however, it’s always been in the melting pot across generations, and this is our time to face the mess. One artist prepared to stand up and tackle the strikingly relevant mess in the 21st century is The Mess:Age.
Founded by musician Glen Brandon, he shares that during this time “we reach an opportunity to awaken and enlighten by harmoniously releasing our souls in freedom from the chains of dogma; we must enhance our visions through the power of music, wisdom, experience…” This message has existed since the dawn of time – from Plato’s Allegory of the Cave to the 1969 anti-war Woodstock Music Festival, art has been used to share profound messages and prompt action. The latest release from the enigmatic singer-songwriter The Mess:Age is ‘MR W.H.O’.
Following his well-received singles ‘ANDROGYNY’ and ‘IS IT TOO LATE’, ‘MR W.H.O’ is The Mess:Age’s first step into 2024. While the releases are entirely DIY from songwriting to composition and production, The Mess:Age is a one-man band, but he is by no means a one-trick pony. With a strong rock-tinged flavour, his melodies blend aspects of folk, post-punk, indie and alternative sounds in a signature brand of music. I find it even more intriguing that each song combines vintage and contemporary styles offering universal, generational, and relatable music for all audiences. Perhaps a symbol that his overall theme and message transcends distance and time?
Leaning strongly toward the indie-folk and indie-rock sounds of the 70s, listening to ‘MR W.H.O’ drags us back to the boldness of yesteryear. Focusing on the power of love and “the human heart… to unlock the codes and doorways of time…”, the track is an immersive emotional experience and not merely a song. Wrapping you in a kaleidoscopic wave of music, a psychedelic twirl of various colours lifts your spirit in the combination of drums, guitars and keyboards. For me, The Mess:Age holds your hand navigating the whirlpool with a big grin and encouragement to press on and find enlightenment.
