B-MACK – Duckgrease Burning At The Crabhouse (2024)
All about the good vibes, singer-songwriter Bruce Mack (performing as B-MACK) brings a blend of funk, blues, soul, rock and everything else to brighten your day. A couple of months ago, we were introduced to B-MACK with his song ‘Silent Witness’, a song about “living in the moment, enjoying the good times the universe has brought you…” and today he brings the good times again with his single ‘Duckgrease Burning At The Crabhouse’.
While B-MACK is joined by bassist Michael Cox, guitarist Ben Tyree, keyboardist Leon Gruenbaum and drummer Chris Eddleton on ‘Silent Witness’, ‘Duckgrease Burning At The Crabhouse’ is an entirely solo single. From composition to recording, performance and production, the new single has a stamp of B-MACK punched into its melody. Alright, so maybe it’s a mostly solo single as he is joined by singer Larayne.
Drawing together drumbeats, a keyboard, rhythm guitar and Larayne’s rich vocals, the track melds together RnB and soul with hints of funk clinging to the edges. B-MACK’s music is enticing and all-consuming from the outset, but it is the eclecticism that makes it impossibly insatiable. Along with RnB flavour, an underlying African groove sits simmering closely with reggae and Native American chants. Each element is distinctive but with an intricate layering that simultaneously highlights individuality while keeping a symphonic harmony. So, in other words, you have an upbeat song keeping the groove flowing while inserting a hint of depth amidst the kaleidoscopic tune.
A party song, no doubt, ‘Duckgrease Burning At The Crabhouse’ meets the desire for escapism from a somewhat tiring existence. B-MACK explains:
“It is an escapist song that speaks of an imaginary place everyone can go to have a good time… A metaphor for ‘there’s a good time going on somewhere and you should be there!’ Inspired by a moment I was preparing duck confit. It tasted so good I started dancing in the kitchen doing some kind of self-inspired dance step that made me think of a time I experienced partying in a backwoods club down south… And who doesn’t love a crab-house?”
