Track of the Day: Cynthia Angelica – Unsteady (2024)

Effortlessly intoxicating and enchanting listeners with her moving music – a fan at her first-ever live show in Washington, DC told Cynthia Angelica that “they were mesmerised and didn’t know if they should move or speak until the set was over” – Angelica is a skilled performer and composer. Known for her ability to connect with audiences in poetic narratives, the US-based singer-songwriter is inspired by humanity in all its forms. While leaning toward the alternative pop genre, Angelica brings a unique blend of alternative rock, pop-rock, classical and indie-pop to the masses. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Unsteady’.

Following her rock-tinged grunge tune ‘Made Of’, Angelica steps into 2024 with ‘Unsteady’. One of her darker tracks, there is a disconcerted uneasiness lurking in ‘Unsteady’ – I suppose a rather apt title. Haunting, skin-chilling, and even reaching into your soul with an icy grip, the new track is a simplistic rush of dark pop. A truly immersive experience, the minimalist approach has a barebones feeling but twinkling lights flutter about with kaleidoscopic creepiness. Think of standing in an empty forest as chills of dark energy twirl about clinging to your skin with desperation.

Terrifying in its magnificence, the vulnerable ‘Unsteady’ has a silent hold. Interestingly, Angelica inserts a brief pause that oddly fills the silence while being silent; then she continues with classical piano enhancing the track’s chilliness but also subduing it. No vocals per se, merely a whisper of her rich tones, however, the slip of her voice is such that you feel pain, fear, conflict and fragility.

“I wrote ‘Unsteady’ in a single sitting at the piano… there were a lot of negative thoughts swirling around in my head about my aptitude for building a career in music, and even more broadly, my ability to find a sense of belonging as a human being on this planet… Our inner critic can be the most limiting and debilitating. I wrote ‘Unsteady’ to bring the negative voices out of my head and into the open… Sometimes, the only way to the light is through the darkness…” – Cynthia Angelica on ‘Unsteady’
