Anthmz – Soft Core (2024)

Born from the desire to break out of a mind-numbing pop music scene with bold, brash, hard-hitting punk, Anthmz is just that – bold, brash and hard-hitting. If you fancy a taste of Pulp, Sonic Youth and The Strokes, the chances are you’ll enjoy the abrupt edginess of the US-based duo. A collaboration between musicians Houston B. Perry III (The Blood Plums) and Kyle Gordan (MammaBear), Anthmz’ sound is sophisticated but with an intimate intensity raging through in raw, rough glory. Join us as we delve into the pair’s debut single, ‘Soft Core’.

The single might be titled ‘Soft Core’ but, for me, the song is a hardcore plunge of hurricane-filled madness. Yet, while a punk-influenced brashness weaves through the track, ‘Soft Core’ is an upbeat blend of grunge, classic rock and tips of indie-rock flowing in a kaleidoscopic melody. Produced with Kris Sampson of Sampson Sound Studios at Bee Sting Manor, ‘Soft Core’ is a blend of pounding drums, searing guitar and rich vocals. Interestingly, the single retains a distorted hint of uncomfortable disunity with each instrument adding a dominant flair to the track, but an underlying harmony binds the tune in its brash symphony.

Listening to ‘Soft Core’ is like stepping into a whirlwind of rushing sound tossing you from one post to another – all with rambunctious rage. While the instruments are intense in their insanity, the vocals act like a warm anchor within the tune. The song is described as “…a melodic banger which tells the relatable story of self-sabotage, self-doubt and keeping people at arm’s length”. Yet, deep in the depths of the punk-rock track, a hint of optimistic empowerment lingers despite the despair of ‘Soft Core’s theme.

In addition to the single, Anthmz released a music video for ‘Soft Core’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
