SUNCAAT – Neighborhood (2024)

After spending a year in isolation to contemplate stuff and hone her musical skills, singer-songwriter and producer SUNCAAT emerges with a new breed of music she dubs “metapop”. From the dreamy haze of psychedelia to the harsh beats of punk-rock and the danceable bliss of 90s Euro-pop, SUNCAAT seeks to push to the edge of sonic conventionalism. Yet, while this is her up-and-coming stamp on the music industry, the Canada-based artist has already made a move in entertainment. Following a directorial debut and collaboration on various projects, she begins her musical project with the single ‘Neighborhood’.

As if turning the page to a new chapter, SUNCAAT’s journey opens with a heart-pounding blast of electronic pop. Bold and high-voltage from the outset, there is no time to settle into a comfortable pop bubble with ‘Neighborhood’ – it’s all engines go and hardly stops for a breath. The thing is, as crazy fast and frenzied as it may be, it’s fantastic in its blood-pumping, pulsating rush of heady music. Sending you down a massive rollercoaster with all its tense twists and turns, ‘Neighborhood’ is insane but insatiable.

While there is a confident beat in a contemporary electropop vibe, SUNCAAT taps her hat at the nostalgic sounds of the 1990s. Taking me back to the raves, clubs and all-night parties of yesteryear, ‘Neighborhood’ is an anthemic tune for any dancefloor, be it nostalgic or new. Fresh and familiar, you feel overwhelmed with the extraordinary eclecticism of the track – particularly SUNCAAT’s almost robotic glitch of vocals; however, a shimmer of warmth oozes from ‘Neighborhood’ setting a wistful grin on your face.

The melody is slightly chaotic, but a good sense of contained chaos but it is SUNCAAT’s vocals that intrigues me. A flush of glitchy electronic beats gives a spark of electronica to her voice. Interestingly, just as there should be an objective vagueness to the tones, SUNCAAT’s lyricism and its execution brims with warmth highlighting the humanity behind the robotics.
