Anjalts – Sometimes The Angels Cry (2024)

Known for her emotional depth, intricate melodies and soul-stirring style, singer-songwriter Anjalts both haunts and enthrals you with her unique brand of pop. Distinctive as a dark swarm of electronic pop, EDM and synth-pop, the US-based musician’s style is making waves internationally as a trailblazing artist in the pop music world. From the UK to France, Brazil to Portugal, Australia to Germany and in her native USA, Anjalts has received critical acclaim from publications, playlist adds, and international airplay. This is our introduction to Anjalts, so join me as I delve headfirst into her latest single ‘Sometimes The Angels Cry’.

Following her well-received single ‘Airbender Alone’, Anjalts shifts from a fusion of alternative pop and indie-pop to a heavier thread of EDM and synth-pop in ‘Sometimes The Angels Cry’. Self-produced with mastering at the iconic Abbey Street Studios, ‘Sometimes The Angels Cry’ is a sophisticated piece of music with elegant textures and layers; however, there is also a raw vulnerability wrapped in the single bordering on the edge of naïve recklessness. The bold electronic beats pulsate beneath like a human heart, while a slaughter of synths smoothly slithers in the tune. A bass guitar harmoniously winds into the melody while Anjalts obscure vocals insert an ethereal haunting to the cinematic soundscape.

Falling into a synth-pop category, ‘Sometimes The Angels Cry’ can easily lie along Magdalena Bay and Lany; however, a tinge of avant-garde sensibilities makes the track anything but pedestrian. In fact, all of Anjalts’ music is anything but pedestrian as she pushes the boundaries of conventionalism. One aspect I find particularly intriguing about her songs is the depth not only of the melody but the lyricism as well. She grabs the core of a concept and tears it apart encapsulating the best and worst of things. In ‘Sometimes The Angels Cry’ she tackles “the inner conflict in relationships on the brink of dissolution, yet still brimming with love.”

Taken from her upcoming album Bluency, set for release in July, ‘Sometimes The Angels Cry’ is sincerity, sentimentality and charm set in an introspective gut-wrenching storm of soul-stirring sound.
