Lleow – the person that I own (2024)
One of my favourite film quotes is from Legally Blonde when the socialite Elle Woods tells her father that being a lawyer “is a perfectly acceptable occupation”. Why does this tickle my funny bone? It’s the issue of conformity, staying within your world and the desire to break out. As with Elle Woods, singer-songwriter Lleow chooses to colour outside of the lines embracing what might be deemed questionable but entirely acceptable in her world; instead of the mid-life crisis she chooses to pursue her dream of music.
Alright, I’ll be honest, some people might think Lleow’s entering the music industry at 40 might have something to do with a mid-life crisis – like the dude who buys a red jag he can’t really afford. Yet, Lleow’s “reboot rock” shouts, with a bad-ass attitude, that you are never too old to “do something naughty” and make a change. She began musical training in 2022 and since then released critically acclaimed singles, featured on international radio stations, hit thousands of streams, and basically made waves globally. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘the person that I own’.
Following the heavier grunge anthems ‘1995’ and ‘Sacrifice’, Lleow takes things down a little to an intimate, emotional, introspective tone in ‘the person that I own’. Produced by Simon Corazza, the new single is a simplistic piano-driven tune interwoven with Lleow’s bold vocals; however, as minimalistic as it is, the stark soundscape is kaleidoscopic. An interspersed rush of strings enhances the haunting melancholy of ‘the person that I own’ yet adds a sense of soothing behind the vulnerable composition.
Melodically, ‘the person that I own’ can have you weeping with its skin-tingling indie-inspired ballad; but the lyricism is what takes the skin-tingling to a breathless intoxication of mind, body and soul. Keeping with the essence of love, Lleow begs the question of whether real love comes from the outside and how do you manage to discover self-love. She takes listeners on “an exploration of the question: do I really belong to myself…”, the answer is unclear but only you can answer it.
