JRTA – One More Toke (2024)

Inspired by MTV, singer-songwriter JRTA found a love for music early on and was determined his destiny lay as a rock star. Who could deny the enticing appeal of Nirvana, Korn, The Cranberries, Backstreet Boys, N*Sync and their glitzy lifestyle with seemingly awesome awesomeness. JRTA began the journey as a guitarist in a garage band, then fell in love with bass guitar. After performing as a bassist and singer in a band in Kansas City, his road took a turn toward electronic music production. Skip ahead to 2024 and he has his hands in various industry pies as a record promoter, being the owner of a national booking agency, and performing as an independent artist. Join me as I jump into his discography with the latest single ‘One More Toke’.

Following his well-received single ‘Say That You Need Me’, JRTA weaves together trap with alternative pop undertones in an electronic pop haze. Dragging you into a dark, desperate and tragic soundscape, ‘One More Toke’ is a complex interplay between grit, grime and delicate haunting easing the crass melody. A song about addiction, JRTA brings the tragic underbelly or raw emotion to the fore. JRTA explains:

“’One More Toke’ is about addiction and lying to oneself about it. On a personal level, it is about weed, kratom and betting my modified Subaru STI on the stock market… It’s a sonic expression of the emotions behind addiction… It’s a sad song born from withdrawal.”

Expertly textured, a layer of electronic beats exists in the background while JRTA sings to a smoother trap melody; a separate, otherworldly division capturing the complexity of addiction. The vast emptiness brings a cold shudder to the crippling void between sober and intoxicated. One side is the gruff intoxication while the other soothes the wound with vulnerable sensitivity.
