Red Skies Mourning – Beautiful Things (2024)

There is no equation or process to creating art, whether it is music, a movie, or a sculpture, there is no perfection with it comes to artistic vision. Red Skies Mourning understands that making music is never an overnight process; it takes time. From a US marine to a musician and producer, Chris Aleshire (performing as Red Skies Mourning) has a plethora of experiences on which he can draw, as well as a diverse eagerness to fuse different styles in a melting pot of awesomeness. This is not our introduction to Red Skies Mourning and each time he continues to astound. He continues to evolve. He continues to make another notch in the constantly turning belt of music.

Following his well-received singles ‘Dangerous’ and ‘Borderline’, Aleshire released the original single ‘As It Was’ alongside this cover of Benson Boone’s ‘Beautiful Things’. Hitting the charts earlier this year, Boone’s ‘Beautiful Things’ received international acclaim with millions of listeners supporting the Billboard Top 100’s #2 track. The interplay of indie-folk and pop-rock oscillates between light and dark in the tune, like sticking plaster binding one style to the other. Red Skies Mourning captures this diversity but with a slight twist to the cover.

While Aleshire holds true to Boone’s song, a layer of soft pop veils the brashness of the original. Smoothing the coarse piercing and heart-pounding rock of Boone, there is a soothing charm to this version of ‘Beautiful Things’. Interestingly, while the song offers an airier pop sentimentality with gentle tones, it is as forceful in its delivery.

Boone explained that ‘Beautiful Things’ is a “ballad about the meaning of life reflecting on the volatility of happiness”. In my opinion, the warm flood of Red Skies Mourning might not overtly display this reflection on life and love; however, its smooth pop vibe enhances intricacy with several layers of emotion and self-discovery. The comfort of Aleshire’s cover with rich vocals hugging you in a warm embrace makes me feel less affronted and more accepted – it’s that side that makes this ‘Beautiful Things’ exquisite.
