Powers of the Monk – Puffy Head (2024)

While Powers of the Monk was founded in 2006, they haven’t exactly been entertaining the masses for the past 20 years… well, not with a continuous presence. Yes, the music is insatiable, and you probably play their 2006 debut album Killing Time on repeat – or at least you should when it comes across your ears; however, it was in 2019 that Powers of the Monk returned from a 10-year hiatus with an evolution in style. Defined as “more electronic rock” back in the day, they wake up in a new decade as something “more indie-pop to indie-folk…”

Uniting with musician and producer Dani Macchi in 2023, David S. Monk (vocals, guitar and keyboards) and CasSondra Powers (vocals and violin) started hitting out singles from the re-recorded version of previously released ‘Firefly’ to ‘Switchin’ Rails’ and the most recent single ‘Puffy Head’. Join us as we jump headfirst into their new track.

Recorded and produced with Macchi, ‘Puffy Head’ is a hypnotic swirl of hazy sonic fog in which you can become easily lost. Cinematic and ethereal, you lie back floating through a psychedelic mix of powerful synths and wistful guitars. Interestingly, the sensation of floating in the air is a perfect representation of the concept behind the single. Powers of the Monk explain:

“This is a fun song about astronauts conquering space. They use the term, “Puffy Head with Bird Legs” to explain the effects of space travel on the human body and we turned that into a dreaming sequence of adventures in space, complete with alien encounters…”

Jovial, laidback (really laidback), chilled and smile-inducing, ‘Puffy Head’ seems completely carefree; however, a shimmer of vulnerability, no not vulnerability, rather an obscure innocence clings to the vocals. Off-kilter and in some ways a little eerie, the whimsical whispers slither through your veins, rattle in your cranium, and pour out your ears. Overall, ‘Puffy Head’ is a fun splash of indie-pop meets dream-pop wonky wonderment.
