ZOE from Earth – Horizon (2024)

Originally hitting our eardrums as ZOE with 2022’s ‘Fire’, the Australia-based artist took another step into our brains as ZOE from Earth. Ricochetting from nerve to nerve with an ethereal haze rushing in the songs, this singer-songwriter leaves an impression with her unique sound. We’re not the only ones wrapped around her finger; across Europe, North America, New Zealand and her native Australia, ZOE from Earth captures audiences with a flick of a chord. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Horizon’.

The first step under her new moniker, although her previous releases have been adjusted to suit the ZOE from Earth brand, ‘Horizon’ is described as “an etheric, atmospheric, space-pop track” as ZOE from Earth steps into the role of producer. With sophisticated elegance, ‘Horizon’ is a swift flow through a kaleidoscopic melody; however, avant-garde obscurity remains offering a slight stab of discomfort for listeners. Airy and wistful, shimmering synths match twinkling keyboards. Yet, while you become lost in the whimsical stretch, heavier rock guitars crash with piercing grunge and then disappear in the velvety darkness.

Ambient and surreal, ‘Horizon’ is an immersive melody, but it is the lyricism that enhances its intricate depth. ZOE from Earth’s unusual vocals flicker in the track and, despite the lightness, she questions the complexity of time and humanity using The Great Gatsby as inspiration. She explains:

“I wanted to read the book before watching the film that people were talking about at the time, and it was one of those stories that stays with you. Gatsby is always looking out at this light, and it dawned on me that I’d been doing this… It felt like most people were, as if we’d all been led into this somehow. I used a similar metaphor in ‘Horizon’, but it’s a conversation about being honest, about whether or not you’re ‘missing the moment’…”

In addition to the single, ZOE from Earth released an official lyric video for ‘Horizon’. You can view the video below or via her YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
