Seán Finn and the Late Bloomers – A Thousand Guesses (2024)

Tipping their hat at the nostalgic tones of the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel, but with a flitter of funk ala Mamas and the Papas woven into a poetic Leonard Cohen lyrical concoction, Seán Finn and the Late Bloomers pull the thread of good music from yesteryear to today. Proving music can transcend distance, time and space, the UK-based indie band connect with audiences of all ages intoxicating them with infectious energy. While this is my introduction to the quartet with only one single to their name, Seán Finn and the Late Bloomers have established themselves as a quirky group boasting confident performances across the UK.

As I mentioned, this is my introduction to Seán Finn and the Late Bloomers, so I am completely unsure what to expect. Turning heads on an international scale, the lads receive critical acclaim across the board reaching far beyond their UK borders; however, am I to be impressed? Will I share in everyone’s enthusiasm regarding this odd indie band? It’s unclear and uncertain but I’m eager to jump into the debut single ‘A Thousand Guesses’.

Soft, soothing and filled with rich warmth, listening to ‘A Thousand Guesses’ is a comfortable conversation with your best friend ending in a brilliant hug. Yet, while harmony exists in the melody, a slight shiver of discomfort breaks through; I’m not saying a bad warble but that heart-stopping gut-wrenching rush of butterflies when you fall in love….and that’s what the song is actually about. A tale of two lovers blissfully aware of each other with pure unconditional adoration but “unrequited tendencies” are veiled in the relationship.

A trojan horse of sorts, the harmonic arrangement breathes with sophisticated elegance; bright happiness shines through the guitars and drums. Finn’s dulcet vocals ooze maturity, however, youthful vulnerability slips into the contented melody. Lively and luscious, one can understand why people are impressed with the quirky band. Yet, for me, it is the oscillation between happiness and delicate fragility that makes ‘A Thousand Guesses’ completely unforgettable.
