The Magic Es – Consequence of You (2024)

For almost a decade, UK-based group The Magic Es have carved a name for themselves as “the best British rock band since Oasis” (Cool Dad Music). After three critically acclaimed albums, two EPs and several singles, and extensive gigging across the UK (including shows with South Africa’s The Parlotones), Pete Thompson (vocals and guitar), Jasper Stainthorpe (bass) and Stuart Catchpole (drums) bring raw talent to global audiences.

The first release in two years, ‘Consequence of You’ is a re-emergence of The Magic Es to the streaming world. Stepping away from the strong indie-rock tone of their music, ‘Consequence of You’ adopts a heavier, harder, pop rock stance. Slivers of Britpop make a quick appearance here and there. Still, overall, the new single is an evolution in sound for The Magic Es showcasing innovation, versatility, and eagerness to try different things.

Recorded at Orange Tree Studios with renowned producer Andy Hodgson, ‘Consequence of You’ is a hurricane of pounding drums, scorching guitars and gruff vocals perfectly joined in a rock-filled symphony. Interestingly, each instrument brings individuality to the harmonic whole. Catchpole’s crashing drums pulsate acting like a pounding heartbeat, while Stainthorpe’s bold bass catches you up. Thompson’s guitars engulf you completely as the gritty vocals press raw emotion while rushing across your face.

The Magic Es explain that “Pete wrote the song about 20 years ago. He’d split with a long-time girlfriend and the song was a cathartic way to exorcise those demons…” To me, ‘Consequence of You’ is a tumultuous, frenzied, chaotic expression of his anger and despair. Filled with rage but lined with vulnerability, this is the song you scream along to when you need to “exorcise those demons”.

In addition to the single, The Magic Es released an official music video for ‘Consequence of You’. You can view it below or on their YouTube channel.
