The Muster Point Project – What It’s Doing To You (2024)

For over forty years, singer-songwriter Kevin Franco has made his way journeying through the music industry with his trusty guitar, multi-instrumental skills, powerful vocals and pure passion for his art. From an 80s cover band capturing the hard-hitting attitude of Judas Priest and AC/DC to his diverse solo project The Muster Point Project, Franco (guitars, bass, organ, percussion and vocals) embodies visionary eclecticism and experimental nature. Joined by the musical stylings of Sterling Laws (drums and percussion) and Oleg Pisarenko (piano), The Muster Point Project (TMMP) began enchanting audiences in 2019, according to Spotify releases, and we join the hypnotised with their single ‘What It’s Doing To You’.

Following the well-received Spanish single ‘Como Los Jaivas’, ‘What It’s Doing To You’ is TMPP’s second track in 2024 and part of their upcoming album (set for release later this year). Produced by Darryl McFadyen, ‘What It’s Doing To You’ is a smooth, silky two-and-a-half-minute rush of kaleidoscopic music holding you in a warm embrace and wrapping you in a comfortable sonic blanket. Sophisticated and harmonic, the bold guitars walk alongside steady drums, powerful percussion and a soul-stirring piano shimmering through the bright melody. Franco’s rich vocals offer a gentle calming breath binding everything in a gold ribbon.

What is most intriguing about ‘What It’s Doing To You’ is not the elegant melody but the juxtaposition of sophisticated maturity and raw vulnerability. Lying within the contented tune is a profound, poignant declaration about the effects of domestic violence on victims and onlookers. Franco explains:

“Fourteen years ago, I lost a friend to domestic violence. The tragic and violent death of someone I knew affected me profoundly. The initial shock of it was quickly followed by the disbelief of how it was seemingly brushed under the carpet by the news coverage of the day… My hope in writing this song is to give the issue more oxygen and allow the listener an opportunity to think about it from a perspective that’s not prescription nor preachy. ‘What It’s Doing To You’ is written through an empathetic lens of a helpless neighbour, aware of what’s happening, but really unable to do anything.”
