Xenia – Sunshine In July (2024)
Soft and dreamy with ethereal vibes and kaleidoscopic feels, singer-songwriter Xenia takes listeners on a soul-lifting journey with her melodies. From her 2020 album Overloading to her critically acclaimed 2023 single ‘Chill Pop Lost Control’, the Australian artist delicately blends various shades of pop in a melting pot of music. This is my introduction to Xenia, but she has turned heads across the globe with her intriguing style from France and Germany to the UK, Brazil, the USA and her native Australia. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Sunshine In July’.
If you take a brief trip in Xenia’s discography, the best way to describe her music is stress-relieving. Whether it’s her single ‘Chill Pop Lost Control’ or ‘Tranquil Space’, her soothing vocals seep into your soul with a caressing breath of pop music; then, it’s just a case of “breathe out all your worries and concerns” and you’re in a state of relaxed bliss.
Following her well-received single ‘Beyond Gravity’, Xenia shifts from a breathy flush of alternative pop steeped in avant-garde sensibilities to a brighter pop sound in ‘Sunshine In July’. I might compare Xenia to modern artists like Taylor Swift; however, there is a maturity to her tone that exceeds stereotypical commercial pop sounds. Breathing life into 90s pop, ‘Sunshine In July’ infuses Brandy and Monica with a kick of TLC bringing up the rear, but simultaneously the contemporary edginess of modern-day pop. Bold electronic beats back the upbeat synths lay the foundation for an electropop sound; however, Xenia’s warm vocals collide bringing a sweet, infectious playfulness overriding any stark electronic tone. In other words, the synths are there but youthful exuberance removes any harshness from the DJ.
Inspired by the joy of summer and the need to enjoy the simple things in life, ‘Sunshine In July’ is the relaxing lift of dreary winter frustration. Xenia explains:
“I wanted to create a song that captures the pure joy and optimism of summertime. ‘Sunshine In Joly’ is about embracing life’s simple pleasures and finding happiness in little moments.”
