Dark Miles – Your Heart Is An Empty Street (2024)

Most well-known as the lead singer of the rock band MOSH, Pedro Lima has experienced the music industry in all its glory. Between 2004 and 2007, MOSH became a sensation in Portugal’s underground rock scene. They supported artists like Marilyn Manson and played the main stage of the Vilar de Mouros Festival in 2005. In 2007, MOSH was nominated for ‘Best New Act’ by MTV with their music video being shown frequently on MTV Portugal. While the band gained great popularity in Portugal and beyond, they are a memory now having disbanded in 2010.

The band may be gone, but Pedro Lima (also known as Pete Miles) reignited his passion for music with a surge of creativity during the Covid-19 lockdowns. Reaching further afield from his established rock sound, Lima embarked on the solo project Dark Miles. From Britpop to synth-pop, grunge to psychedelic rock, his music pays homage to the 80s and 90s styles. The debut single from Dark Miles is ‘Your Heart Is An Empty Street’.

Taken off his upcoming album 10 Miles Into The Dark – a concept album that takes a journey into “the depths of the soul” – ‘Your Heart Is An Empty Memory’ leans strongly toward Depeche Mode. Embracing their darker side there is a strong reminiscence of Depeche Mode’s later sound, particularly the song ‘In Your Room’. Yet, while the force of vintage alternative rock exists, the instrumentation gives ‘You Heart Is An Empty Street’ a unique Dark Miles flair.

Listening to ‘Your Heart Is An Empty Street’ is like standing on the edge of a deep lagoon swirling with black liquid; however, shimmering lines create a kaleidoscopic thread in the sonic pool. Guitars and drums add a touch of red, while the bass brings some blue. The keys offer a burst of gold, and the interspersed saxophone blinks with a shining purple hue. Intriguing and intoxicating, you are hypnotised by the music with Dark Miles’ gruff vocals shooting gold into the pot.

Dark, heavy and filled with grittiness, ‘Your Heart Is An Empty Street’ has a melody to drag you down but simultaneously lift you up. Dark Miles explains:

“’Your Heart Is An Empty Street’ addresses the theme of personal liberation, after a life of physical and psychological abuse and a violent existence that comes to an end with the same violence that characterised it.”
