9 o’clock Nasty – Dead Pilot (2024)

Considering the regular 9 o’clock Nasty reviews on The Other Side Reviews, one might imagine we would become bored with the Leicester band. Hell no, it’s the complete opposite. Instead of pushing them away, we pull them close eager for more theme songs to the intricate web of life. From the garage rock single ‘Savage Mechanic’ to the collaboration with The Margaret Hooligans’ Meg Cratty in ‘Bird of Happiness’, 9 o’clock Nasty showcases versatility, originality and addictive awesomeness in each release. Now, put on your goggles, cross your fingers and take a deep breath as we jump head-first into the band’s latest single ‘Dead Pilot’.

Following the anarchistic exploration of dystopian societies in ‘Smash Grab and Go!’, the UK-based trio tip into the darkness of authoritarian control over life and death in ‘Dead Pilot’. While chocolate and reality TV might be important, ‘Dead Pilot’ explores the most significant aspect of our being: our actual lives. Glimpsing at the “part myth, part horror story” of the mysterious disappearance of Flight MH370 in 2014, 9 o’clock Nasty cuts to the confusion and fear anyone who reads about the tale would experience – let alone the passengers.

Staying true to their punk roots, ‘Dead Pilot’ fuses crashing drums with scorching guitars and bold bass in a pounding punk melody. With hard-hitting beats, 9 o’clock Nasty holds you in a vice as your heart pulsates in your ears, your skin chills and you gasp for breath. Interestingly, while the melodic “what the hell was that” brashness grabs you by the throat, it is the elegant cohesion between all elements that sends a rush of raw emotion through your mind.

Loud and insane but with a chilling haunting lingering in the brash vocals, ‘Dead Pilot’ is a replication of an aeroplane crash – particularly the abrupt ending highlighting potential death. I am already nervous when it comes to flying but ‘Dead Pilot’ is a theme song to ignite further fear of flights… a sort of “listen to that, you see what I mean” anthem for everyone who fears being in the hands of a pilot (or Uber driver or train conductor).

In addition to the single, 9 o’clock Nasty released an official music video for ‘Dead Pilot’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
