Fie Eike – Sad (2024)

Fie Eike is a singer-songwriter based in Copenhagen, Denmark, who has just released her second single ‘Sad’ in support of her debut album which will come out later this year.

‘Sad’ is a song of stark beauty that showcases Eike’s sensitivity as a songwriter, her emotive power as a vocalist, and her subtlety at the piano. It opens with the piano delicately piecing together the bare bones of a minor chord progression as a frame for the plaintive melody that she delivers with her full, rich voice, the song’s emotive focal point. Both instruments sound like they hold a lot of power in reserve, creating musical suspense that plays into a lyrical description of emotional tension that has peaked in a relationship.

Eike’s delivery can be quite soulful at points, keeping you engaged through a repetitive setting until that setting suddenly changes harmonically to an unusual chord progression for the bridge, one we didn’t expect. While there are no lyrics to this part of the song, the sudden change implies a degree of hope for the beleaguered relationship.

‘Sad’ describes the bravery it takes to confront emotional challenges that keep erupting from an unresolved past. Eike comments that “there is a sort of allergy towards challenging emotions. There seems to be a misconception that challenging emotions somehow limit our productivity and well-being when in fact it is quite the opposite.”

Ultimately, Eike does a lot with a little, creating a powerful song that has piqued our interest in her upcoming album.
