Love Ghost – TIME TRAVEL (2024)

Over the past year, US-based band Love Ghost continued to tackle intricate complexities of life in their soul-stirring singles; however, the band has delved into various styles, sounds and genres highlighting their boundary-breaking skills. In previous pieces, the lads tapped into rap-rock, Afrobeat, alternative rock and nu-metal but it is the distinctive Love Ghost sound that enchanted us so many years ago… and we continue to be enchanted.

From ‘Human Error 404 (ft. Ritorukai)’ and ‘GLOCK (ft. Dan Garcia)’ to ‘Haunted House (ft. FLVCKKA’)’ and ‘Dope Man (ft. DJ SWITCH GHANA and Camidoh)’ (a personal favourite), Finnegan Bell explores different genre realms showcasing Love Ghost’s versatility to meld the Love Ghost’s sound with various Mexican artists. Following their well-received EP THE SPEED OF DREAMING and singles ‘ESPEJO (ft. El Santi)’, ‘Luna Azul (ft. Monde and Helian Evans)’ and ‘Angelic’, ‘TIME TRAVEL’ draws together Love Ghost, Mexican artist Yung Dupe and producer Shantra.

While I can similar ‘TIME TRAVEL’ to previous tracks ‘Human Error 404’ with a slap of ‘ESPEJO’, ‘TIME TRAVEL’ is a unique fusion in its own right. Softer and more soothing than past material, Finnegan Bell layers heart-warming vocals atop the melody; however, the gruff grittiness slices through the melodic tone. I find this appealing as it encapsulates the raw pain of the existential theme alongside sophisticated production by Mexican producer Shantra.

‘TIME TRAVEL’ is a song about a troubled girl and a desire to travel back in time to absolve her from trauma/demons, but in doing so her demons entered my own life.” – Love Ghost on ‘TIME TRAVEL’

Fluttering beneath the bold vocals is a melting pot of guitars, drums and interspersed electronic beats keeping the pulse going like a pounding heart. The sensational pop-rock voice drapes across the melody but a burst of blistering trap breaks from Yung Dupe. Brash, abrupt and aggressive, Yung Dupe’s rugged sound taps in enhancing the pain, power and oddly enough fragility of the protagonist.

Not necessarily sincere or sentimental but with an obscure tenderness, Love Ghost and Yung Dupe expose the complexities of addiction, obsession, trauma and absolution in ‘TIME TRAVEL’.
