Mery’s Key – Step By Step (2024)

Embracing the beauty of simplicity, Italian duo Mery’s Key add a kaleidoscopic flair in a minimalistic style. Melding Mery Bertós’ vocals with Kevin Reginald Cooke’s bass, the pair are trailblazers in a unique form of pop. Yet, just as they fall into the pop genre, a slip of old-school jazz flits about with a genre-diverse approach. While their debut single is turning heads internationally, Mery’s Key is known for engaging live shows. Handpicked to perform at the G. Modena Theatre in Palmonova as entertainment during the lifetime career award presentation for Italian journalist Enrico Mentana, Mery’s Key are appreciated as both a confident live band and a recording one.

Founded in 2021, Mery’s Key gathered a strong following with confident live shows; however, it is their debut single ‘Step By Step’ that intoxicates individuals on a cross-continental scale. Bridging the gap between pop, indie-pop and jazz, ‘Step By Step’ taps into a contemporary pop style with an upbeat, toe-tapping melody. Yet, simultaneously, Cooke’s bass kicks up an old-school jazz vibe with Bertós moving vocals complementing a soothing soul groove.

For me, one of the more interesting aspects is how an acoustic duo captures the heart of a full band. In fact, the sophisticated production has a live performance feel in its studio-based melody. Soothing, smooth, gentle and oozing passion, ‘Step By Step’ caresses your heart and makes you grin; however, an intricate exposition of frustration and doubt launches in its vulnerable content. Mery’s Key explains:

“’Step By Step’ captures the universal struggle of wanting so much more so much quicker yet acknowledges that achieving our desires takes time. The lyrics explore the emotional journey of dealing with impatience and self-doubt, but the chorus serves as a poignant reminder to the listener that the process must be trusted…”

In addition to the single, Mery’s Key released an official acoustic music video for ‘Step By Step’. You can view the video below or via Mery’s Key’s YouTube channel.
