Alexa Villa – My Kind Of Damaged (2024)

Surrounded by musicians since the day she was born, it seemed likely that Alexa Villa would find her spot in an artistic journey. While other children played with toys offering Barbie a chance to follow their dreams, Villa was immersed in the reality of following dreams – “I come from a family of dreamers. Growing up, we didn’t have money…we had music.” Her passion burned bright in the sea of creativity, but it was the connection of her poetry and introduction to the piano that encouraged greater heights. From sitting in with her parents’ band to playing with her brother’s band, Villa quickly embarked on her project developing a unique, inimitable sound.

Influenced by female powerhouses like Gwen Stefani, Joan Jett and Alanis Morissette, listening to Alexa Villa is like being hit between the eyes with a psychedelic, kaleidoscopic thud. As with Gwen Stefani and Joan Jett, a blast of charismatic charm oozes forth in her moving melodies; this is the case once again with her new single ‘My Kind Of Damaged’. While her previous track ‘MySpace’ rattled with pop-punk forcefulness, ‘My Kind Of Damaged’ has forcefulness in a subdued execution.

Drawing together her classical training and “all over the place” melodic obscurity, Villa’s new single is a tumultuous whirlpool of pop-rock and indie-pop. Self-produced with mixing by Austin Seltzer, ‘My Kind Of Damaged’ is a bold flood of heavy beats and pop inclinations wrapped in a pop-punk veil. Grazing an open wound of self-doubt, frustration, inner conflict and angst, the single is thwarted with vivid vulnerability in a chaotic frenzy. Yet, the classical training delicately weaves a sense of precision tunnelling the madness through a silvery tube of insanity. Villa explains:

“’My Kind Of Damaged’ addresses all the fears once glazed over with late nights, heavy pours, fake laughs and blue hair. This song is about facing those fears after what seems like a lifetime of running from my feelings. It’s a stop along the way to discovering that maybe I am enough. I am emotionally stripped butt-ass naked searching for anyone who could love me and the wars inside because maybe they’re my kind of damaged too.”
