No Drinks For Jimmy – Not The One (2024)

Known for their confident performances, powerful melodies and all-around infectious vibe, No Drinks For Jimmy is an enigmatic rock band trailblazing the independent rock music scene. Drawing together the natural talents of Kurt Lobdell (vocals), Joe Chichetti (guitar), Dan Wilson (bass) and Doug Wilson (percussion), the US-based foursome might only have four releases on Spotify, but they have a world of experience between them. Immersing themselves in the diversity of their influences, backgrounds and musical adventures, No Drinks For Jimmy transcends the norm and bursts through in a blazing light of sound – a sound that is No Drinks For Jimmy and no one else.

Along with many international curators, No Drinks For Jimmy turned our heads a few years ago with the well-received single ‘Walk Away’. Inspired by life with all its jubilance and grittiness, the group tackle the complexity of relationships with a rock-inspired elegance. In ‘Walk Away’, No Drinks For Jimmy drew on acceptance, empowerment and resolution to walk away from romances. In their latest release, ‘Not The One’, the band travels through the sensuality of lust, the toxicity of obsession and the uplifting self-discovery.

Returning to the music scene (or at least the Spotify stream), ‘Not The One’ is the first release for No Drinks For Jimmy since the 2021 album Verse Chorus Verse. Traversing various rock-influenced genres from grunge to punk, garage rock and hard rock, listening to ‘Not The One’ is like being pushed face first into a tumultuous sonic river before lifting your head with comfortable calm.

As scorching guitars meet pounding drums with Lobdell’s gruff vocals shimmering along, a mellifluous flow emerges in the distorted intensity of the melody. An intricate precision of punk brashness, hard rock damning and smooth flits of alternative rock, ‘Not The One’ captures the emotional intensity of lust, desire and ultimately acceptance in relationships. Accepting you are “not the one” dismisses vulnerability and fragility leading to an empowering sense of self-worth – from a desperate darkness to rejuvenating light.
