Magdalia – Hold It Up (2024)

Known for her expert storytelling skills, exquisite vocals and tender melodies, singer-songwriter Magdalia intoxicates audiences with ease. Seamlessly stitching together personal narratives and sublime instrumentation, her artistry is sophisticated elegance bound by raw innocence. We came across Magdalia in 2021 when she released her debut single ‘Shy To Shine’; from then to now, she has shone bright and continues to astound us with her exuberance. If you haven’t heard of Magdalia, then we invite you to jump into her discography with us. The latest addition to her repertoire is the single ‘Hold It Up’.

Following the well-received singles ‘Fault Lines’ and ‘Noreen’, Australia-based Magdalia saunters into 2024 with ‘Hold It Up’. An evolution in her sound, ‘Hold It Up’ retains a hint of reminiscence to Florence + The Machine, but primarily in Magdalia’s obscure vocal tones. Warm, rich and bold, dabs of Florence Welch tinge the single; however, a distinctiveness pushes through in the single. Not only regarding the vocals but also in the folk-inspired melody.

One aspect of ‘Hold It Up’ that may influence its tone is the collaboration with upcoming singer Mayzie Chew. A student of Magdalia, Chew’s sweet voice brings a childish warmth to the tender single; however, it is the placement of Chew’s innocence against Magdalia’s maturity that showcases the song’s depth both lyrically and melodically. Moving harmonies above a simplistic arrangement of guitars and drums, ‘Hold It Up’ blurs the line between kaleidoscopic and minimalist.

Penned, produced and recorded with Seetali Mack and Malikah McEwen, ‘Hold It Up’ is a soulful single that simultaneously floods your heart with joy and grips it in a vice of melancholy despair. Inspired by life in its totality, Magdalia has explored the light and dark sides from tumultuous relationships to self-acceptance. ‘Hold It Up’ tackles human fragility and the “universal need for unwavering support in times of darkness. When it storms down, everyone needs a shoulder to lean on and someone to hold them up.”
