Track of the Day: Colourshop – Be Yourself (2024)

Interestingly adopting the moniker Colourshop, singer-songwriter Alfredo Salvati is exactly what it says on the tin: a sonic shop filled with kaleidoscopic elements of different genres in a distinctive inimitable form. Originally the collaborative project of brothers Diego and Alfredo Salvati, Colourshop reached audiences with a unique folk-rock sound tinged with an Italian flavour to charm and intrigue. When Diego Salvati opted to relocate to Spain, Alfredo continued performing as a one-man band keeping Colourshop alive. Following a three-year hiatus, Colourshop returns with the new single ‘Be Yourself’.

The last release from UK-based Colourshop was his 2021 single ‘Northern Lights’ – an indie-folk tune with warm, rich vocals atop a soothing acoustic guitar. Opening 2024 with ‘Be Yourself’, Colourshop retains its signature folk sound with acoustic charm; however, sprinkles of pop flutter throughout the melody. An intriguing element, and one that showcases Salvati’s sophistication as an artist, is the movement from folk verses to heightened pop choruses with slivers of interspersed indie-rock bringing a rock-inspired edginess.

I might say that ‘Be Yourself’ is a guitar-driven track but the swirl of instrumentation lost in a funnel of sound questions this. It’s clear that the acoustic guitar strumming is prominent with folk-pop sensibility; however, the bold beats and sneaky synths flood the arrangement enhancing a sense of dreaminess, wistfulness and jovial whimsy. Colourshop’s vocals add richness to ‘Be Yourself’, yet simultaneously hide a vulnerable fragility in the confident execution.

Merely listening to the melody with Colourshop’s voice is heartwarming and tender, but it is the lyricism and theme behind ‘Be Yourself’ that truly inspires. ‘Northern Lights’ spoke of thrilling adventures and exciting experiences; ‘Be Yourself’ is more intimate and personal weaving through innermost emotions. Recorded at Barcelona’s RoomTo with Jason Boshoff and Oscar Garcia Bragado, ‘Be Yourself’ is a sensitive reminder to remain true to yourself while travelling through life. Colourshop explains:

“This song is a hymn to authenticity… it’s a journey of self-empowerment and a celebration of individuality… serving as a reminder to embrace one’s inner nature and live life authentically…”
