The Dream Spiral – Redemption (2024)

Inspired by the likes of Depeche Mode and Massive Attack, The Dream Spiral blends elements of indie-rock and synth-rock in their moving melodies. Despite having only two singles to their name, the Australia-based music collective has years of experience in the music industry. Drawing together the influences, inspiration and experience of five genre-diverse artists, The Dream Spiral is just what it says on the tin: a spiral into eclectic, inimitable music in a joyful dream-like haze. Come with us as we delve headfirst into The Dream Spiral’s discography.

Following their debut single ‘Life On Mars’, ‘Redemption’ is the group’s first release in two years. Shifting from an ethereal synth-driven flood of music, ‘Redemption’ kicks things up a notch leaning toward rock-inspired tones. While a hint of Depeche Mode sits beneath the hard-hitting alternative rock style, ‘Redemption’ hits you between the eyes with its bold guitars and crashing drums. A slip of keys pierces the melody intermittently bringing a psychedelic edginess, as well as a reprieve from the ferocity of the song.

While the melody of ‘Redemption’ is one to leave you lost in a sonic hurricane pulled from pillar to post, there is a soothing sincerity flitting through the tune. Perhaps this is the kaleidoscopic swirl of music or the profound lyricism; what I do know is a juxtaposition between heady and heartfelt emerges in ‘Redemption’.

My favourite parts of ‘Redemption’, if you can pick out favourite sections, are the vocals and the end. Husky and gruff, a palpable grittiness is felt in the warm, rich and grunge-esque male voice. Holding you close in the hurricane while leaving you to flounder, the sublime vocals expertly capture the decadence of ‘Redemption’ – a song about “desire and sin and how the insidiousness of religion makes us feel guilty for feeling pleasure…” Touching on the ending of ‘Redemption’, the sudden cut in instrumentation offers a blunt, abrupt and poignant feeling. Simple and pulsating, single beats lead you out of the hurricane giving you a chance to catch your breath before moving on.

In addition to the single, The Dream Spiral released an official music video for ‘Redemption’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
