ANIMI VOX – Sugar (2024)

For over a decade, or just about, the German group ANIMI VOX have been enchanting listeners with their moving melodies. From their 2013 debut EP Falling Stars to 2020’s single ‘Shared Pain’ and the more recent 2023 single ‘Clouds’, ANIMI VOX have sauntered across the 90s and 2000s world of rock. Sitting alongside All American Rejects, The Wombats, Fall Out Boy, Soundgarden and The Ataris at some point in their journey, the lads showcase diversity, innovation and versatility with an indie-rock flair. This is our introduction to the group; however, they have turned heads across the globe from the USA and the UK to their native Germany, France, Australia and Portugal.

Entering 2024 with ‘Sugar’, ANIMI VOX hit the ground running with a rock sensation. Following the single ‘Lighthouse’, ‘Sugar’ delves into old-school 90s alternative rock with a shimmering glean of their signature indie-rock clinging to the edges. Crashing drums match powerful guitars with an infectious burst of sound. Yet, while a harmonic calm exists within the arrangement, a distortion twinkles beneath to offer each player prominence before uniting in a mind-blowing whole. Infectious and intoxicating, the rich vocals slide along the instruments caressing your ears as you dive deeper and deeper into the music.

Taking a listen to ANIMI VOX’s discography, I am blown away by their passion for moving music. I might mention more established bands for comparison, but then again ANIMI VOX easily steps up alongside some of the heavy hitters. In ‘Sugar’, the light as a breeze melody catches your heart with a heavier oomph bringing up the rear. Hypnotic from the opening, ‘Sugar’s tune elegantly aligns with its profound theme of addiction. ANIMI VOX explains:

“The melodic depth of ‘Sugar’ explores the tension between sweet allure and inner desire. What is your vice? Every now and then, the answer to this question is unexpectedly cheerful and sweet. ‘Sugar’ is dedicated to an obsession, the desire for industrial sugar, which is not so different from the consumption of narcotics.”

Many artists make an impression with their music but few remain entirely memorable. ANIMI VOX is completely unforgettable. Even if you aren’t a fan of rock, I am certain these lads will change your mind.
