Track of the Day: Madame Psychosis – Hopeless (2024)

Known for their unique blend of alternative rock and indie rock, Canada-based group Madame Psychosis has established themselves as one of the most innovative bands on the Toronto scene. Bold and enthusiastic performances of moving and mesmerising melodies have turned heads not only in the local scene but also internationally. From their debut self-titled album in 2017 to their recent release ‘Concrete Streets’, Madame Psychosis has made multiple appearances at iconic Toronto venues, played at festivals such as Canadian Music Week and featured on various television programmes and radio stations. This is our first taste of Madame Psychosis, so come with us as we jump into their upstanding discography.

Entering 2024 with a blast, Madame Psychosis releases their new single ‘Hopeless’. Following a successful year filled with critical acclaim and heart-pounding gigs, the fivesome turns down the tone in a soul-filled flood of music. While the band have a strong signature rock sound, ‘Hopeless’ shows not only Madame Psychosis’s innovation but eclectic, versatile, experimental nature. One of the most significant aspects of a good band is constant growth and seeking a new take on even a distinctive style. Tapping into the intimacy of Amy Winehouse with the moving beats of old-school Joss Stone tinged with an Alanis Morissette grittiness, but all coming together in a powerful, rich, warming inimitable style, ‘Hopeless’ is a progression in Madame Psychosis’ sound – an exciting one at that.

The melody is enthralling as pounding drums harmonically flow alongside bold guitars inserting an alternative rock edge; however, and this is merely my opinion, it is vocalist Michelle Mondesir’s luxurious tones that truly bring something special to ‘Hopeless’. Her balance of confident warmth and tremulous vulnerability capture the fragility behind the profound concept. She explains:

“I wanted to delve deep into heartbreak, but I also wanted it to be a redemption song that speaks to the ability to grow from wrenching pain and the disheartening moments we all inevitably experience in life… The idea of loss runs throughout the song, including the loss of the person you loved, loss of parts of yourself, and loss of hopes and dreams for a future that seemed irreversibly attached to a now failed relationship.”

Sincere and sentimental, introspective and original, moving and soul-stirring, Madame Psychosis delicately guide you through the mists of loss while still pouring painful despair into that mire of tragedy. For me, and I’m certain for many others, Madame Psychosis’ ‘Hopeless’ is not hopeless…. simply hope bound in a fragile ribbon.
