Frank Joshua – Victim (2024)

As with Joseph in his coat of many colours, singer-songwriter Frank Joshua emerges in his brilliant cloak of rock, funk, trip-hop and indie-pop interwoven with a shimmering silvery haze of dream-pop. In 2020 the UK-based artist began intoxicating listeners with ‘Panic In The Kitchen’, and the spell continued from 2021’s ‘Cry Blue’ to 2023’s ‘Seeking To Hide’ before taking a softer spin on ‘Winter Cowboy’. Described as incredible, beautiful and profound by notable publications, Frank Joshua reaches the minds of audiences on an international scale – and there’s no plan to stop. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Victim’.

Combining the classical flair of ‘Winter Cowboy’ with the twinkling pop sheen of ‘Seeking To Hide’, Joshua saunters into 2024 with the alternative pop single ‘Victim’. Recorded and produced at North London’s Whitelight Studios with Tony White, ‘Victim’ presents sophisticated maturity in the arrangement; however, a cinematic delicacy oozes forth with innocent rawness resting in the melody. Piano-driven with interspersed strings, the single is soft and gentle with a heartwarming tenderness. Yet, despite the tender comfort and charm, the movement of strings and piano awake nostalgic painfulness with Joshua’s husky vocals sending shivers across your skin.

The melody is intriguing with a simplistic minimalism woven through delicate complexity, but it is the lyricism that truly captures my soul. Frank Joshua shares that “the song is about being a victim of one’s heart”, and this “delicate as glass” emotion is evident in its poetic words. Interestingly, while the intricate uncertainty shines in melancholic vulnerability, Margo Buchanan’s whistling brings sincerity and warmth to a seemingly desolate song.

I discovered Frank Joshua several years ago and am constantly astounded by his brilliance as a singer, songwriter and musician. I cannot wait for more from this naturally talented artist.
