Teika & The Raw Beat – Falling In Love (2023)

With only three singles to their name, Teika & The Raw Beat should be considered newbies in the music scene, but they seem to be reaching audiences internationally with critical acclaim. Raw and rugged, an innocent vulnerability oozes from the Berlin-based trio, yet the sophistication behind their melodies highlights a sonic intelligence far beyond their one-year existence. Drawing together the natural talents of Mateja Kert (vocals and piano), Georg Kostron (bass) and Gidon Carmel (drums), Teika & The Raw Beat weave emotional lyrics through moving melodies in a soul-stirring way. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Falling In Love’.

Following the well-received tracks ‘Overdrive’ and ‘The Garden’, ‘Falling In Love’ is the third taster to their upcoming debut album Bones ‘n’ Stones. Showcasing their versatility as musicians, Teika & The Raw Beat swag from punk in ‘Overdrive’ to garage rock in ‘The Garden’, and a folk-infused pop ballad in ‘Falling In Love’. Given these three songs alone, I am certain Bones ’n’ Stones will be a rush of diverse styles whipping your hair back and cradling you in a musical bubble of magic.

While there is a vast difference between the three separate tracks, one element retained in each is the poetic lyricism, intense emotion and insight into humanity. ‘Falling In Love’ delves into the intricacy of relationships – personal, material and spiritual – and this is perfectly caught in the melody itself. A combination of tender strings fuse with piano and drums in delicate layers. Interestingly, each instrument has prominence demanding attention but ultimately it all comes together in a skin-chilling, breath-taking, mind-numbing way.

For me, ‘Falling In Love’ is a fragile song that is both simplistic and kaleidoscopic. It might open with a plink-plonk of piano veiled by Kert’s haunting vocals; however, the surge of strings captures a whirlwind of sonic chaos flooding your brain, whipping you about, and reaching into your soul with intense insanity. The thing is, as the single progresses it might be mayhem, but the mayhem is contained in a comfortable bubble oozing intricacy from every note.
