SIR-VERE – Destroya (2023)

After hearing SIR-VERE’s single ‘The Crazies’, our ears were kind of numb, a slight tingling down the spine and a gut-wrenching feeling in our stomach – but it was all awesome! Hailing from the UK, Ian McEwan (vocals), Craig Hammond (vocals and noise), Gary Morland (guitars, bass and keyboards), and Stevie Vega (keyboards) ensnare listeners with their experimental blend of rock, EDM, post-punk and whatever else takes their fancy. Our ears have recovered since ‘The Crazies’, so why not hit another round of SIR-VERE’s insanity with the single ‘Destroya’.

One of the singles from SIR-VERE’s upcoming re-issue album LOVESCOPE, ‘Destroya’ is a nostalgic flair of Britpop, indie-rock, hip hop and classic rock rolled into a hard-hitting blast of sound. Similar to ‘The Crazies’ an innate recklessness slices through ‘Destroya’ but without the upbeat insanity of the former. Kaleidoscopic swirls of sound thrash about in ‘Destroya’ with classic rock guitars and leanings toward 90s hip-hop in the vocals. A sliver of The Verve shoved into AC/DC rock with the brashness of The Streets – well, something like that.

For me, listening to ‘Destroya’ is like being approached by teensy-weensy, smaller-than-Thumbelina imps crawling into your ear and swaggering about your brain with tiny battering rams. It’s chaotic thrashing you from pillar to post; however, it is an organised chaos as the melody holds insanity but keeps it tucked beneath a powerful rock tune.

Keeping in line with the force of their music, SIR-VERE is more than a crazy band, they are a profound band. Inspired by society and its uncertainty, SIR-VERE explains that ‘Destroya’ is a “snapshot of the alarm and paranoia of life under Covid lockdown with nature’s wrath and society’s failures combined for maximum oppression, borrowing George Floyd’s tragic words “I can’t breathe” as a catch-all to simultaneously sum both up…”
