I Panic – Laughing, Talking, Loving (2023)

Sir Paul McCartney said that “a good song doesn’t care whether it’s played by a rock band, just on a single guitar or with a full orchestra. The song remains.” Profound words from an iconic man, and singer-songwriter I Panic is sharing such songs with the world. The brainchild of Dutch multi-instrumentalist Marcel van Tetering, I Panic is an explosive swirl of sound carrying you to another level of existence with his magic music – not literally, of course.

Technically formed as a band with lifelong friends in 1987, I Panic was an imaginative trio creating original music; two years later, the group dissolved but I Panic the solo project remained. With the power of a full band oozing from a single set of hands, van Tetering entertains audiences and hits our ears with his new single ‘Laughing, Talking, Loving’.

When we left I Panic, he shared his exposition of relationships in ‘(Welcome To The Night Of) Broken Promises’. Following his well-received singles ‘Marry You’ and ‘Forgot To Tell Me’, I Panic slips ever further into the intricacy of human emotion in ‘Laughing, Talking, Loving’. He explains:

“It tells the story of two lovers who can’t be together and how this results in missing and dreaming of simple things, like walking hand in hand or falling asleep on the couch together…”

Recorded and produced by I Panic, with mastering done by Headroom Mastering, ‘Laughing, Talking, Loving’ adopts the Bowie-inspired art rock sound of the 80s. Not as bouncy or upbeat as ‘Forgot To Tell Me’, the new single is soothing, soft and gentle despite its tumultuous lyrical underlining. Bold drums float beneath the rush of guitars with a slip of piano-laced into the melody.

For me, it is the piano with I Panic’s rich vocals that hits your heart in a sad but inspiring way. Sincere, sentimental and filled with tearful vulnerability, ‘Laughing, Talking, Loving’ is the theme song for long-distance relationships.
