One Flew Over – Not Good For Me (2023)
With powerful rock, a whiff of pop and slicks of soul, Irish duo One Flew Over saunter through various genres creating a sound that is entirely One Flew Over. While the pair only began releasing music last year, Irene Ni Chuinn and Martin Quinn are far from being the newbies in town. Session vocalist and lyricist Ni Chuinn joined multi-instrumentalist, touring live musician and music producer Quinn in 2019 gathering diverse influences, experiences and skills as One Flew Over. Since the release of debut single ‘Liar Liar’ in 2022 to the most recent track ‘Not Good For Me’, One Flew Over has turned heads across the globe gaining critical acclaim and garnering a growing following.
Following the well-received singles ‘Maybe In Another Lifetime’ and ‘Rise’, ‘Not Good For Me’ gathers an indie-rock sound but with shimmers of pop, soul and trembling blues. Recorded and produced by Martin Quinn at JAM Studios, ‘Not Good For Me’ has a hard-hitting confidence to the track; however, slight vulnerability waiver beneath.
Andrew Quinn’s drums crash beneath Martin Quinn’s bass with his keyboard stabbing the single. The single may open and close with a soft ambience, but the guitar takes control with an intoxicating heaviness. A rollercoaster ride of highs and lows, the instrumentation ebbs and flows as we roll through ‘Not Good For Me’. For me, the rush of piano and James Quinn’s cello give a softer, symphonic feel adding a touch of elegance to what is a pulse-racing song. Add Ni Chuinn’s bold, gut-wrenching vocals and you are entirely lost in the hypnotic tune.
One aspect I find particularly intriguing about ‘Not Good For Me’ is how the instruments capture the core of the theme. Penned by Irene Ni Chuinn, the single explores a toxic relationship or rather an obsessive one. One Flew Over explain:
‘Not Good For You’ explores the inner conflict of being drawn to someone who makes you feel alive but also hurts you; a person who is a bad influence, yet you struggle to break free because of the draw.”
This is my introduction to One Flew Over and what an introduction. Easily one of the most exciting bands to cross my path, I am addicted to One Flew Over and am so glad they didn’t fly over my head.
