Atlin Morgan – Home (ft. Daniel Sinclair) (2023)
With a true passion for music from the 1930s and 40s, singer-songwriter Atlin Morgan brings a hint of Ella Fitzgerald’s attitude with Billie Holiday’s sassiness to her laidback melodies. While Morgan’s penchant for singing led to classical training and a potential career in classical music, she chose to forego pursuing the classics leaning toward genres like pop, blues, jazz, and folk; then again, her classical training does highlight her natural talent as a singer in everything. Upon first listen you might consider Atlin Morgan to be a folk singer but there is so much more to the Canadian artist. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Home’.
Taking a quick gander at her repertoire, Morgan has only three singles beneath her belt including the one we’re about to review. On the heels of her tracks ‘September’ and ‘Haunt Me’, Morgan showcases originality, innovation, and a tendency to teeter along genres. Interestingly, ‘Home’ captures a sliver of ‘September’s folk with the soothing sensuality of jazz-filled ‘Haunt Me’. Toe-tapping and laidback, ‘Home’ has you sitting on a comfortable rug in front of a sonic fire utterly content with life – or at least, I can imagine this playing as you sit back and love life.
Originally composed as a single for a solo artist, one voice soon expanded into a duet with singer-songwriter Daniel Sinclair. Following a jam session when Sinclair and Morgan sang one of each other’s original songs, it was clear Sinclair’s rich vocals would add a moving warmth to Morgan’s ‘Home’. Combining his dulcet tones with her fairy-like voice, ‘Home’ is a gentle ballad created for lovers, friends, and family, drawing everyone together in its hypnotic charm.
Just as Sinclair and Morgan’s vocals blend effortlessly building a warm hopefulness in your chest, the interplay between Sinclair’s acoustic guitar and Morgan’s piano enhances the harmonic flow of the jazzy song. A weaving of rich vocals, moving instruments and a heart-warming ambience, ‘Home’ sets a happiness in your being that exceeds any potential expectations. I mention listening to ‘Home’ is like sitting before a crackling fire; the clever ebb and flow of Sinclair and Morgan increase the comfort of the scene wrapping their arms around you as it snows outside.
