Cody Coyote – There Tonight (2023)
With a passion for initiating positive change in society with the desire to help “future generations of this world to feel empowered and seen”, singer-songwriter Cody Coyote takes us on melodic journeys of self-discovery and enlightenment. Known for his hard-hitting take on mental health, the Canadian musician combines elements of hip-hop, electronica and pop in his mesmerising tunes. This is my introduction to Cody Coyote, but he is already turning heads with his award-winning music melodies achieving “Ottawa’s Best Hip-Hop Artist” and “Ottawa’s Hip Hop Artist Of The Year” at the 2022 and 2023 Ottawa Awards.
While Cody Coyote has far more to his name than music, including motivational speaking, workshop facilitation, and the host of The Beat, it is his music that draws us to Coyote today. Taken from his 2021 EP Zaagi’idiwin, ‘There Tonight’ is a sonic swirl of mellifluous pop; however, a hint of pop-rock lingers beneath leaning toward a heavier, harder 90s rock tone. Just as the beat of ‘There Tonight’ veils a rougher tinge, the single remains smooth, soft and laidback with Coyote’s rich vocals holding you tight.
Listening to ‘There Tonight’, it is easy to see why Cody Coyote is an award-winning artist. While the melody has you drifting off on a serene sonic flight, a profoundness lurks within the poetic lyricism. Talking of relationships, Coyote says he “will be there tonight” if you need him to be. This might be considered an endearing connection between star-crossed lovers…then you watch the music video, and you see the more toxic side of things. Teaming up with Jacqueline Buffalo, Steven Thompson and Ben Telford Visuals, we see the grittier theme of domestic abuse as Coyote draws attention to an issue that lacks acknowledgement or awareness. You can view the video below or via Coyote’s YouTube channel.
Sincere, sentimental and filled with a raw passion, Cody Coyote reaches beneath the silver surface and finds the darkness of life in his single ‘There Tonight’.
