A J Green UK – Losing You (2023)

Hailing from Wolverhampton, UK-based Anthony Green picked up a guitar over 40 years ago and hasn’t put it down since. Inspired by all types of music, he experimented, developed and discovered his natural talent for music. Over the years, Green played with numerous bands, mostly rock and pop, earning a loyal following and a critically acclaimed reputation. After playing with the band Shiver, Green had people wondering if he would write songs again and in 2017, he released a self-titled ten-track album. Skip ahead a few years and A J Green UK is on the scene releasing original material with international recognition. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Losing You’.

As a solo artist, Green uses a completely DIY approach to production. Self-recorded and produced, his music has a “personal touch” as a true labour of love. Yet, while he stands tall as a solo vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Green recruits fellow musicians to make the melodies all they can be and more. Taken from his upcoming album Before The End, ‘Losing You’ features backing vocals by Zoe Green of The Zoe Green Band and drums by Martin Dolman of Kick Up The 80s; A J Green UK plays all other instruments and sings lead vocals.

Following the well-received singles ‘See You On The Other Side’ and ‘Take Me Away’, both on the upcoming album, A J Green UK adopts an upbeat, high-paced tone in the rock-inspired ‘Losing You’. Finding and blurring the line between modern-day alternative rock and vintage classic rock, Green grabs us by the hand slipping along a slick slide of heavy guitar-driven music. While the track is a mash of crashing drums, scorching guitar and bold rock vocals, glimpses of other genres stab the crazy ride.

A J Green UK’s rich and raw vocals carry the melody; however, a brief glimpse of hip-hop/rap-rock slices through with a rap-influenced string of lyrics before rolling back to the rock sound. Zoe Green joins us at the end with her bold voice as a type of conversation between the male and female protagonists. I find this intriguing as it so elegantly matches the theme of a failing relationship; the lyrics “I’m losing you’ flow harmonically between the singers but a melancholic despair exudes in its gut-wrenching, heart-breaking rhythm.
