Vincent J. Rigney – My Baby Let Me Down Tonight (2023)

Intricately weaving his stories and soul into passionate arrangements and poetic lyricism, singer-songwriter Vincent J. Rigney brings you into his world with his melodies. Over the past year, Rigney has indulged us with his debut single ‘Beautiful Human’ and sophomore single ‘Squeezed To The Bone’ bringing a unique brand of soulful blues. While he is a firm favourite at The Other Side Reviews, we are not the only ones loving his work. Critically acclaimed on various blogs, playlists, and regular airtime on BBC Radio, Rigney has a following far beyond his UK borders. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘My Baby Let Me Down Tonight’.

The third track from his highly anticipated EP Songs From The Water Tower, ‘My Baby Let Me Down Tonight’ keeps the blues-tinged flair of ‘Squeezed To The Bone’ but is far smoother. Recorded and produced with Edd Hartwell at Lime Monkeys Studios in Essex, the arrangement is soft and gentle but with a melancholic edge. Bold drum beats pulse behind a steady guitar in rhythmic harmony; however, a crescendo to high-powered guitar riffs breathes harder rock into the melody. To some people, the song might seem repetitive, but it’s all based on the narrative – the tone, the beats, and the profound emotions.

Penned after a night out when Rigney “got into an in-depth conversation at a music venue with a complete stranger who felt he was being tested on their first date together…”, ‘My Baby Let Me Down Tonight’ captures the frustration and confusion of the first date. The lyrics tell us of a young girl who meets a new guy but spends the night kissing others on the dance floor because, well, she knows she can; and Rigney infiltrates everyone’s (not only the dude she’s meeting) mindset.

The lyrics represent the mind-numbing question: “Are you serious?”. The soulfulness interwoven in the melancholic tune is disappointment, and the heightened rock guitar is a slip of anger. A melodic masterpiece that perfectly captures the state of disbelief and inability to understand what the bloody hell is going on. I’m guessing there won’t be a second date.
