NMTL – Sweet Remy Jewel (2023)

Working on the phrase that “specialisation is for insects”, Swedish NMTL expands his eager sonic reach across the musical spectrum. The moniker of songwriter and producer Henrik Hjort, NMTL has been involved with various artists, songwriters and producers for 40 years. Interestingly, it is an 80s style that covers both NMTL’s range despite the diversity oozing forth. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Sweet Remy Jewel’.

Following the singles ‘Save Us’ and ‘Say goodbye, then heal’, ‘Sweet Remy Jewel’ shifts NMTL from upbeat soul-inspired tones to a soothing soft rock ballad with hints of indie-pop entwined. One could argue that the type of sound is linked to the collaborative artist picking up their specific style. Yet, one could also argue that NMTL moulds the style building a genre-diverse masterpiece. ‘Sweet Remy Jewel’ elicits the sweetness of German singer Elyz and songwriter Elliot Håkansson in a twinkling rock arrangement.

Elegant with a delicate touch of rich vocals in a warm swirl of music, ‘Sweet Remy Jewel’ endears a tranquil sincerity; however, this comfort is merely a smoke screen. Veiling an intricate tale of isolation, rejection and cold despair, ‘Sweet Remy Jewel’ follows a young boy who is “enthusiastic about his nerdy interests” but remains on the outskirts of the community because no one else shares his passion. It’s a tale of bullying, vulnerability and fragility all too common with people in today’s world but caught in a serene sound. Tender and rich but chilling in icy cruelty, NMTL encapsulates the anguish people feel but don’t always acknowledge when faced with isolation.
