Yodashe – Visualization (2023)

It might seem odd for an individual with a background in architecture to establish herself as a producer, composer and artist, but then again, not really. Architecture requires precision, skill and an intricate knowledge of how to put things together in an appealing way – music is the same. UK-based Yodashe uses various sounds from pop, indie-rock and classical music to build an avant-garde design. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Visualization’.

Unlike her debut single ‘Take Time’ and sophomore single ‘Timing’ (both released in 2020), Yodashe embraces a harder, more eclectic sound in ‘Visualization’. Following the well-received, hard-hitting bold beats in ‘Salarywomxn’, ‘Visualization’ may be considered somewhat soothing; yet it simultaneously retains a forceful flash of heavy darkness with the beats. A true evolution from her 2020 style, Yodashe’s work in 2023, including the new single, has an obscurity exceeding any electronica I have heard.

If ‘Visualization’ were a building, I think it would be something like this: it opens with a smoother, gentler RnB meets pop tone acting as a comfortable lull into a warm foyer. Step a little further and take the elevator up, and you are suddenly ripped from the comfort to a clinical space – but with a few unique decorations. On one side, you have a stark apartment with silver facets all about oozing the cold minimalist stream. On the other, there is a kaleidoscopic swirl within forceful beats but with the same brashness. Head up an escalator and you find yourself in a room of rich tones with world music flairs painted across the wall.

Penned and produced by Yodashe, with mixing by Matthew Keightley and mastering by Katie Tavini, ‘Visualization’ is one hell of a ride. Interestingly, the madness is an organised insanity aligning elegantly with the theme of self-discovery, empowerment and hopefulness. Yodashe explains:

“The inspiration for ‘Visualization’ came from a process I started to follow during a time in my life when I was feeling lost… For a few weeks I did the exercise of staying put against the open window facing the sun with my eyes closed until I would feel the sun burn on my eyelids. I would try to formulate specific images in my mind, future scenarios which made me happy and excited… for the rest of the day I would focus my actions around things which were aligned with achieving that goal…”
