The Pulltops – With You (2023)

With over 20 years in the music industry, I am certain we could call guitarist Tom Crowell and drummer Mark Pierret veteran musicians. Hailing from Milwaukee, the US-based duo “immediately clicked when they joined their first band together” and the rest, as they say, is history. Skip ahead a bit and in 2022, the pair released original music as The Pulltops – a wonderful find for everyone and anyone.

Coming from two diverse preferences regarding music, Crowell is influenced by the experimental underground scene and Crowell leans further toward old country and soul music; however, they find a balance between the two adding more styles to the melting pot. With dabs of indie-rock, power-pop, pop-rock and old-school classic rock, theirs is something refreshingly new with a nostalgic edge. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘With You’.

When we left The Pulltops, they had released the single ‘Wide Awake’ – an intriguing alternative rock tune looking at the power of human resilience and determination. In ‘With You’, the lads blend the 80s with a shimmering 90s pop-rock flair and a sheen of 21st-century indie-pop fluttering about. A combination of powerful guitar and drums add a bold beat to the melody which is only enhanced with the rise and fall of its instruments. The moving verses have a toe-tapping guitar-drum beat with smiles all around; however, it is the chorus’ crashing wave of sound with rhythmic hooks and breath-taking harmonies that make ‘With You’ epic.

Falling in line with their distinctive sound, ‘With You’ is a “synth ballad…mixing retro and modern sounds”, but it is far more than a soothing production. You can twirl about singing along to ‘With You’ in its mellifluous soundscape. You can become lost in the gentle haze of pop surrounding you like perfume. You can enjoy the laidback tone with a grin-inducing vibe. Just as the melody is chilled, the overall song has a profound intricacy lurking beneath the surface.

Yes, it is a love song with lyrics like “we promise forever, that we will be together”; but it is deeper with intense intimacy oozing from the passionate piece. Sincere, sentimental, and the theme songs to old-school films like Sixteen Candles, The Pulltops capture the heart of romance in ‘With You’.
