Track of the Day: Lucy Crisp – Locked Down (2023)

Inspired by life in its totality, singer-songwriter Lucy Crisp reaches the core of our reality with a pop-powered fist of optimistic joy. She began writing songs at age 12 and has thrown herself into those melodies ever since. In 2018, Crisp pursued her dream by attending the Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies in Nottingham, but it was her experience during lockdown that pushed her to share her music with the world. Her debut single ‘Feet’ hit the internet and instantly resonated with listeners near and far. The latest addition to her discography is ‘Locked Down’

Influenced by the likes of Lorde, Ellie Goulding and Dua Lipa, Lucy Crisp uses pop-filled singles to connect with audiences and “leave a legacy in this world”. It’s not so much that she wants people to remember her name; rather that she wants to create awareness and understanding of people who live with disabilities and reach those feeling scared, lost, fearful, isolated and vulnerable. Taken from her upcoming EP, 65 Roses, UK-based Crisp elegantly explores adversities with hopefulness in the single ‘Locked Down’.

Transcending time, ‘Locked Down’ is a three-and-a-half-minute fusion of vintage and modern-day pop. Bold beats and shimmering synths drive the track with a nostalgic flair of the 80s; however, Crisp’s bold vocals add a strong Dua Lipa meets Katy Perry quality. Following her well-received single ‘One Summer’s Day’, Crisp continues to bounce about with reckless joviality in the new song. Tossing you into a sonic whirlpool, the melody swims about you with kaleidoscopic harmonies in a hard-hitting but “light as a butterfly’s wing” mysticism.

“I’ve always wanted to create a nostalgic modern synth-pop song that allows my fans to either dance, break objects in a rage room, or both. More importantly, I want my fans to get lost to the upbeat rhythms and feel the freedom to express themselves and their emotions however they want.” – Lucy Crisp on ‘Locked Down’

Along with the charming melody, ‘Locked Down’ is a brilliantly bright pop tune but with an inner profoundness. Using a personal narrative, Crisp shares her tale of escapism taking you by the hand to navigate a journey of adversity, struggles and fear coming out with a sense of positivity and empowerment – a true case of finding the light at the end of the tunnel.

In addition to the single, Lucy Crisp released an official music video for ‘Locked Down’. You can view it below or via her YouTube channel.
