A Chat with Renee Ruth (03.10.23)

Proving that anything is possible if you work hard and refuse to quit, singer-songwriter Renee Ruth sees her lifelong dream of being an original artist come true. Capturing hearts with her fresh, emotive, unique brand of pop, the US-based artist can ensnare your senses from the first note. We speak with Renee Ruth about her self-titled debut EP, treasured possessions, cover songs and future plans.

OSR: What can you tell us about your debut EP Renee Ruth? Is there any particular theme or backstory?

Renee Ruth: The backstory is, it’s my story. The release of this EP has been the cumulation of decades trying to figure out who I was in this world after losing my mom in my teens, how to survive in a country that isn’t my own and the constant search for the life I’ve dreamed of since I was a child.

OSR: Did you face any challenges when writing and recording the EP? If yes, what were they?

Renee Ruth: The greatest challenge was time. I became a full-time real estate agent so I could afford to create the album. Running a multi-million dollar real estate business makes it challenging to carve out the time to not only be creative but productive in the studio.

OSR: You mention on your press release that you performed cover songs for several years. Why did you choose to move away from rather unique interpretations of cover songs?

Renee Ruth: I still do them, and actually have 2 that I recorded recently (Little Pat Benatar cover and Radiohead), but 10 years as a cover artist garnered the stage experience I wanted to have but took me too far from my greatest passion – writing original music.

OSR: Do you think your EP is an accurate representation of you as a musician at this moment?

Renee Ruth: I think it showcases the beginning of the range of music I plan to write! There is still so much more music I have yet to release and I’m still writing, so I’m loving the direction this is all going!

OSR: If you could change one thing about the EP, what would it be?

Renee Ruth: I would have added one more song.

OSR: What do you hope people take from your music?

Renee Ruth: It has always been my hope that people would feel what I did creating it and that I do performing it. ❤️

OSR: What does music mean to you?

Renee Ruth: It’s the reason for everything I do.

OSR: What is your most treasured possession?

Renee Ruth: My life.

OSR: If money were no object, what would you do?

Renee Ruth: Make dreams come true.

OSR: What can we expect from Renee Ruth in the future?

Renee Ruth: I want to be part of the community that achieves things long after people ever expect them to, a Grammy, a national opener act, the Superbowl, and anything else that can be dreamed up! 😊
