Track of the Day: Chris Caulfield – Lovesick (2023)

The simplest way of describing singer-songwriter Chris Caulfield is an eclectic genius with masterful melodies. A combination of hip-hop, alternative rock, dark-pop, and emo rock with slivers of everything else, we never truly know what to expect from the Canada-based artist.

Chris Caulfield has been performing with bands around Toronto since his early teens, so he “found himself on a unique path early…”; however, he stepped aside and released music as a solo artist in mid-2021. From his early singles ‘Gripped’ and ‘Sober’ in 2021, Caulfield began turning heads. Skip ahead a couple of years and he is making even more waves with ‘Porchlight’ and ‘Ugly’. Not to mention his 2022 remixes of ‘Feelings’ adding another dimension to his musicality.

As the years progressed, Caulfield’s sound transitioned into a more sophisticated, confident tone in 2022 as compared to the rawness of 2021. Interestingly, this year finds us hearing something in between – rawness slathered across a mature production with bold clarity searing across. In ‘Ugly’, Caulfield brought griminess to a hip-hop meets alternative rock gem, while ‘Antigravity Mind Chamber’ presents brash metal lurking beneath hip-hop. ‘Lovesick’ stands out as a coherent fusion of alternative pop with darker nu-metal sentiments.

As diverse as his unique sound, Caulfield’s melodies have a rollercoaster effect as emotions surge forth. In ‘Lovesick’ the dark stream of music pulls us out of summer with both forcefulness and delicate balance. Gritty and grimy, the bold beats carry Caulfield’s gruff vocals enhancing the skin-tingling mischievous grin. Yet, simultaneously has an aggressive gut-wrenching angst. Fragile with a hard-hitting blast, confident with a hushed innocence, a slap in the face, and a warm hug navigating the setting sun – ‘Lovesick’ is a symphonic cacophony in a complex soundscape.
