Wuzy Bambussy – Yesterday’s Shoes (2023)

The brainchild of songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Nikolai Jones, Wuzy Bambussy is an exciting melting pot of various genres. Traipsing the joviality of pop with the sassiness of jazz and a round-house kick of electronic twinkles, UK-based Wuzy Bambussy has something for everyone. After a two-year break from releasing music, Jones joined forces with vocalist Kat Harrison on the funk-tinged single ‘2 Miles High’ in 2023. The latest addition to his repertoire is the single ‘Yesterday’s Shoes’.

Continuing his partnership with Bristolian vocalist Harrison, ‘Yesterday’s Shoes’ is an elegant blend of piano, acoustic guitars, drums and percussion with keyboards flitting through in smooth movements. Following the toe-tapping sass of jazzy ‘Shoo Be Di Do’, ‘Yesterday’s Shoes’ is a quirky blend of pop with indie-pop and RnB sentimentalities.

A merging of various sounds and styles presents in a sonic hurricane; however, a classical precision exists in the arrangement with a distinction between all elements. It is as if each instrument is introduced, stands up and bows playing a little solo before falling in line with the rest to continue with moving harmonies. The one aspect binding everything is Harrison’s rich vocals. Slithering through the melody, her silky tones draw you in navigating the kaleidoscopic swirls of sound.

So, what do I really think of ‘Yesterday’s Shoes’? In a word: intoxicating. Smooth and mellifluous you become lost in the wistful single, but a warm sense of security travels through keeping your feet firmly on the ground. Upbeat and fun, I highly recommend ‘Yesterday’s Shoes’ to anyone and everyone. This is their sixth out of ten monthly singles being released in 2023. I await the remaining four with anticipation while still enjoying the six at my disposal.
