Sophia Bavishi – Money Power Glory (2023)

Combine the power of Florence Welch with the moody intimacy of Lana Del Rey and you have Sophia Bavishi. Based in the USA, singer-songwriter Bavishi is quickly earning a reputation for haunting, emotive melodies but she retains obscurity using live digital production and finding different ways to create music. Firmly placed in the pop genre, Bavishi might be considered commercial pop; however, she traipses digital sounds from bouncy electropop to synth-driven indie-pop. This is my introduction to Sophia Bavishi, so come with me as I dive into her critically acclaimed repertoire.

Alongside her single ‘This Is Who We Are’, ‘Money Power Glory’ sees an evolution in Sophia Bavishi’s sound. Throughout 2021, she fell into the electropop scene with melodies to fall alongside Troye Sivan or Shawn Mendes; however, the honing of her skills displays innovation as an artist. Using Ableton to diversify her sound, Bavishi blasts into 2023 with a harder pop sound. In 2022, she began the shift with the darker indie-pop single ‘Fragile Heart’, but now we hear maturity mingled with whimsical innocence in the production.

Following the well-received ‘This Is Who We Are’, Bavishi clipped into an indie-rock vibe with electronic stylings. ‘Money Power Glory’ draws on the mysterious moodiness of Lana Del Rey’s version; however, Bavishi brings a sensuality of her own to the cover single. Hushed and dark, the synth-driven melody acts as a smooth, flowing sonic river, oscillating between dark depths and lighter ripples. Luring you onto the river with a hint of a smile, Bavishi ensnares your senses with rich vocals similar to what you might hear in a smoky jazz club.

Bold and confident with the same sense of haunting empowerment, Sophia Bavishi elegantly mimics Lana Del Rey. Interestingly, while strong similarities exist, Bavishi inserts an extra sense of mysticism making the song her own.
