Frank Joshua – Seeking To Hide (2023)

Have you ever felt the need to be hidden but want people to know about it? It is more common than you think, particularly in the age of social media, and it brings up a profound paradoxical concept. If you don’t want to be seen why speak about it? Singer-songwriter Frank Joshua tackles this existential issue in his new single ‘Seeking To Hide’.

When we left Joshua, he had us tapping our toes to a groovy whirlpool of dream-pop with ‘Patent Leather Car’. Skip ahead a few months and Joshua has traipsed soothing synth-pop with ‘Wonderful You’ and hard-hitting trip-hop in the remix of ‘You Are All I Need (Jon Kennedy version)’. Soaking up the influences from these two styles, ‘Seeking To Hide’ is smooth and mellifluous but with an EDM pulse.

Recorded alongside producer Tony White, ‘Seeking To Hide’ has all the thrills of an electropop buzz with the mellow flow of pop slithering beneath. Bold beats pierce the softer interior giving off an urgent forcefulness; however, as blunt as the electronic pulsating is, the synth-driven sound eases any pain. A beautiful, well-textured representation of that paradoxical theme – wanting to hide from the world with the pulsating beats but choosing to speak about it in a soothing array of synths.

One aspect I find particularly intriguing is the interspersed classical piano. Its light-hearted “plink plonk” is tender, binding the pain, turmoil, conflict and frustration with a silvery sonic thread. As always, Frank Joshua’s smooth vocals melt your heart making you feel you are not alone.
