Jason Andrew Griffith – Soil and Ashes (2023)
According to Spotify, singer-songwriter Jason Andrew Griffith has only been sharing his sound with audiences this last year. However, given that some of the songs from his album Reclaimed: Early Recordings and Demos are live tracks from 2010, I’d say Griffith’s been astounding listeners for much longer. Hailing from Canada, Calgary-based to be exact, Griffith brings a unique blend of country to our ears sliced with vintage blues, rock and folk. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Soil and Ashes’.
This is my introduction to Jason Andrew Griffith, but he has been turning heads for years reaching far beyond his Canadian borders. Following the well-received track ‘Four O’clock Show’, he shifts from a softer ballad to an upbeat, toe-tapping country tone in ‘Soil and Ashes’. Interestingly, while there is a warmer vibe to the single as Griffith embraces you in a sonic hug, the mournful haunting of ‘Four O’clock Show’ slivers through the melody.
A collaboration with award-winning artists Matty McKay, Spencer Cheyne, Justin Kudding and Mitch Ray, ‘Soil and Ashes’ is a blending of natural musical talent. Produced at Evergreen Sound by Mark Troyer, each contribution is sophisticatedly woven into a bold tune. Yet, just as there’s an upbeat but mournful element, raw vulnerability flutters along the well-textured melody adding a tint of grey melancholy to the kaleidoscopic soundscape.
Matching swirls of sonic colour in an intoxicating sweep, Griffith can captivate listeners with the music. It is, however, the vivid imagery and poetic lyrics that lift spirits in a profound way. Focusing on connection, family and the struggles of life, a glimpse at humanity is at the core of Griffith’s music and ‘Soil and Ashes’ touches on the “aftermath of a bad relationship”; but there is a glimmer of hope in the song as Griffith reminds us “that it can be fertile ground to grow something even better…”
Sincere, sentimental and introspective, Jason Andrew Griffith (and the rest of the troupe) releases the inspiring single ‘Soil and Ashes’.
