Blindness & Light – The First Light Of Day (2023)
Known for his profound lyricism, Blindness & Light shows a fascination with humanity exploring the grittier areas of life through moving melodies. When we first came across the artist, Blindness & Light sang about toxic relationships in ‘Another Day’ and earlier this year, he took a different slant finding peace and hopefulness in “a maelstrom of conflict and destruction” with ‘The Old Skylight’. Today we take a gander at another hopeful masterpiece – ‘The First Light Of Day’.
Technically an informal collective of talented musicians who “are free to come and go as they please”, Blindness & Light’s anchor is the singer-songwriter Colin M. Potter. With numerous positive reviews, interviews and radio plays across the globe, the collective has been turning people’s heads for several years with its obscure sound. This has led to Blindness & Light being referred to as “a masterpiece” and “drastic, sprawling with darkly hallucinatory instrumentals showcasing the brilliant mind of Colin M. Potter”. With ‘The First Light Of Day’ we see more showcasing of Potter’s brilliance.
Following Blindness & Light’s self-titled debut album, ‘The First Day Of Light’ adopts a mystical, whimsical sonic landscape. Influenced by 80s and 90s post-punk, there is a hint of Joy Division lingering in the melody; however, when opening a slip of Celtic folk appears setting the stage for something lighter than the hard-hitting swirl. Wistfully crafting the sounds to meet the title, this song captures the first light of day – the teetering grey of dawn before dipping into the kaleidoscopic shock as the sun comes into sight.
Recorded on the Isle of Anglesey and then completed in Warrington with producer Tony Denmade, ‘The First Light Of Day’ is performed entirely by Potter – from dulcet vocals to shimmering guitars and pounding drums. The melody is definitely soul-stirring, but the lyricism brings a further thought-provoking sincerity to the song. Touching on independence, freedom and liberation from criticism, ‘The First Light Of Day’ exposes a light at the end of the tunnel. Potter explains:
“The single tells the tale of a secret admirer of a repressed person who breaks from her past and starts anew. The love expressed is pure and unselfish with joy in seeing her newfound freedom.”
