The Totem Spirit Animals – Get My Groove (2023)

Dedicated, passionate, devoted and patient – just a few words to describe the Australian duo The Totem Spirit Animals. After years of honing, tweaking, creating and perfecting their music-making skills, Eddie Bouchard and Nic D’Adamo bring together the prowess of “musical rebels” to support them as they both navigate and write about the 21st century. Come with us as we delve into their recent release ‘Get My Groove’.

Taken from their debut album THE WAY WE FEEL!, ‘Get My Groove’ is a synth-driven bite of electronic pop laced with a toe-tapping funk spirit. Dipping into the funk grooves of the 70s, a nostalgic whiff of the head-bopping, body-swaying “man, that is totally where it’s at” attitude; however, The Totem Spirit Animals smother it with a strong electropop tone making it contemporary with a fluttering dash of vintage-ness. This showcases not only the pair’s innovation but their originality and masterful skills as musicians.

One aspect I love about ‘Get My Groove’ is how it is both smooth and sharp. The chilled-out soothing tone of funky vocals clashes with the electronic beats. Interestingly enough, just as the bite of electronica smashes against the soothing funk they also weave together in a mellifluous, charming, highly sophisticated composition.

Oozing a mystical sound to ensnare our senses, ‘Get My Groove’ is an anthemic tune that will have people grooving from Berlin underground nightclubs to Glastonbury music festival. Like The Beatles, Nirvana, Chicago and Earth, Wind and Fire left a legacy with their albums, The Totem Spirit Animals worked tirelessly to leave something behind for future generations. ‘Get My Groove’ and THE WAY WE FEEL! are a testament to their mastery.
