Coma Beach – Nothing Right (2023)

Exploring the darker, grimier and more aggressive side of humanity, German group Coma Beach capture themes of shock, rage, pain, chaos and isolation in their music. Formed in 2021 (based on Spotify streaming), the fivesome have quickly earned a reputation for hard-hitting, powerful melodies with an intimate intensity – and to be honest, I bet their stage presence is just as intense. This is my introduction to Coma Beach, but their praises are being sung at an international level with coverage from various media publications, notable playlists and radio stations. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Nothing Right’.

Taken off their debut album The Scapegoat’s Agony, released in 2021, ‘Nothing Right’ traipses old-school punk and classic rock with tinges of metal slivering through the single. While the melody is a harmonic one in its punk rock style, the well-layered tune forces you to pay attention to each instrument hitting you from various angles in the dynamic arrangement. Pounding drums bring insanity from one side and scorching guitars slice across while locked in a discomforting wrath of sound. But it all comes together in the end.

Tapping into his inner Sid Vicious, vocalist B. Kafka teeters on the edges of ‘Nothing Right’ before diving headlong into the track with an aggressive ferocity. A punch in the face, Coma Beach’s influences of Sex Pistols and Bad Religion are highly evident; however, the fusion of genres shows originality lurking beneath in a contemporary punk flood.

The melody can have you jumping about the mosh pit with reckless abandon, but it is the lyricism that brings depth to ‘Nothing Right’. Known for their expression of existentialist issues, absurdities of existence, and inner conflict, Coma Beach is not exactly a “let’s jump up and down to the cheeriness of it all” band. ‘Nothing Right’ is a dark dystopian tale where the protagonist takes “stock of his deeply lamentable existence so far [and] erupts into a harrowing scream of anguish and disbelief.” I told you it isn’t the cheeriest of topics but through the crazed angst, Coma Beach brings clarity in their artistic vision.
